Larry Towell: Boundaries

Spanning four decades of Larry Towell's career, Boundaries explores land, landlessness, and control through an intensely human perspective. The exhibition brings together selections from Towell's major photography series, moving between deeply personal images of his family and home in rural Lambton County and photographs documenting conflict, displacement and political upheaval around the world.

About the exhibition
Boundaries brings together work from across Towell's extensive career, including photographs from The Mennonites, The World from My Front Porch, El Salvador, No Man's Land, Afghanistan, and The History War.
Together, the works consider how relationships to land shape identity, and what happens when people are separated from their homes, communities, and territories.
The exhibition was originally presented at the Judith & Norman Alix Art Gallery in Sarnia, Ontario from October 3, 2025 to March 21, 2026.
About Larry Towell
Born in 1953 and raised in rural Lambton County, Larry Towell is an internationally recognized Canadian photographer, poet, and musician.
His work has documented historic events, conflict, human rights, and everyday life around the world while maintaining a strong connection to his own family and home in southwestern, Ontario.
Towell became a member of Magnum Photos in 1988 and his photographs have been exhibited and collected internationally.
From Lambton County to new audiences
Boundaries reflects JNAAG's commitment to developing ambitious exhibitions rooted in this region while contributing to broader conversations in Canadian and international visual culture.
Its presentation in Hamilton marks the next chapter for this exhibition developed here in Lambton County and creates an opportunity for new audiences to experience Towell's work.
