Virtual Learning Units

Calling all teachers, guardians, and caretakers! Are you in search of additional educational resources? Check out JNAAG’s Virtual Learning Units!

The Gallery is pleased to contribute to virtual learning with creatively crafted asynchronous lessons that are adaptable to traditional and alternative classroom settings. Within each unit you will discover instructions, a list of required materials, and supplementary links to facilitate the experience. Units include viewing exercises and an array of hands-on art projects.

Our Virtual Learning Units serve as the perfect complement to JNAAG's Virtual Exhibitions, enriching the learning experience with engaging activities.

Unit 1: Body Flips

This unit focuses on beginner pencil crayon technique, collage, character drawing and creative response. Inspired by the collaborative drawings of Z’otz* Collective, you will learn to draw and collage your way to an interactive art work. You also have the chance to collaborate with Judith & Norman Alix Art Gallery instructors as a way to simulate the experience of creatively responding to others drawings.

Taking its name from the Mayan word for “bat,” Z’otz* Collective consists of three artists with Latin American roots: Nahúm Flores (Honduras), Erik Jerezano (Mexico), and Ilyana Martínez (Mexico/Canada). For over fifteen years, these artists have worked collaboratively out of a shared Toronto studio.

Unit 2: Watercolour Techniques and Group of Seven Inspired Collage
This series of activities focuses on foundational colour theory, watercolour techniques and collage making. Inspired by the 100th anniversary of the Group of Seven as well as the inception of what would become the JNAAG’s permanent collection. Students will have the opportunity to explore a virtual exhibition and investigate a timelime and archival artifacts that will tell part of the story of art in Canada and Lambton County.

Unit 3: Exploring Identity Through Mark Making

This series of art based learning experiences will allow students the opportunity to explore Darla Fisher-Odjig’s virtual exhibition: Beneath the Mask: Symbols as a Healing Phenomenon as they learn about mark making through experimental drawing exercises that inspire connection and contemplation. Be playful with mark making, draw using free form lines, and create poetry using word prompts as you are learn about the artist’s work and inspiration.
