John Williams working on the mural in the lecture theatre at the Judith & Norman Alix Art Gallery.
John Williams
Debwewe Giizhik | (sound in the distance) from the sky
September 5, 2025 – March 7, 2026
Artist reception: Friday, October 3, 2025 from 7 - 9 p.m.

John Williams works primarily in acrylic to paint vivid works that reflect both contemporary and traditional Ojibway life. His art bridges realism with the iconic Woodland style—portraying daily life alongside cultural teachings, beliefs, legends, and spiritual symbolism. His artwork offers a heartfelt tribute to his heritage, preserving stories and perspectives through a visual lens.

Experience the energy of this expansive mural for yourself, on display in the JNAAG lecture theatre.

From a young age, Williams displayed a deep passion for art. His artistic interest eventually led him to the Ontario College of Art in Toronto (now OCAD University). Williams has completed notable commissions for the Maawn Doosh Gumig Community and Youth Centre, Rondeau Provincial Park, Bluewater Health, and the Sarnia Police Tactical and Academic Training Centre. He regularly exhibits in local art galleries and is an active participant in the regional pow wow and art scene. This is his first solo exhibition in a public art gallery.
