Liana Russwurm, White Orchid, 2018; oil on panel

Liana Russwurm
Homme
October 2, 2026 – March 20, 2027

Opening Celebration: First Friday, October 2, 2026 │ 7:00-9:00PM
Artist will be in attendance │ Live music, drinks and light snacks

Liana Russwurm’s portraits find inspiration in the dramatic naturalism and chiaroscuro* of Baroque artists like Caravaggio (1571-1619), whose paintings captivated her as a student in Florence, Italy. Her most recent works continue to recontextualize Baroque techniques within contemporary portraiture.

At first glance, Russwurm’s paintings appear rooted in historical tradition; however, contemporary details disrupt this reading. The result is a compelling interplay between past and present that reflects Russwurm’s sustained interest in representing beauty and vulnerability and creating personal narratives through portraiture. Reminiscent of early painting traditions, each subject is positioned behind carefully constructed arrangements of objects which act as quiet indicators of identity.

Russwurm is a graduate of the Ontario College of Art and Design University and completed a year of study in Italy. Her work has been exhibited across Canada and Europe and is held in public and private collections. She lives and works in Alvinston, Ontario.
