JNAAG First Friday Promo Image

For this First Friday on November 7th, we have so much going on that we decided to stay open extra late. The gallery will be open from 6:00 pm to 10:00 pm, so you will have lots of time to see all three of our new exhibitions and our special robot-in-residence.

A number of events opening this First Friday encourage active visitor participation!

[Rokeby_VeryNervousSystem]David Rokeby's Very Nervous System is a remarkable interactive exhibition that engages and fascinates people of all ages. Organized and circulated by the Carleton University Art Gallery in Ottawa, the exhibition uses video surveillance technology, synthesizers, a sound system, computers and software designed by the artist to translate visitors' movements into music and/or sound, offering visitors a chance to experience the work in their own unique way. Winner of a Governor General's Award in Visual and Media Arts in 2002, Rokeby has been at the forefront of interactive media art for over two decades. Rokeby will be present this First Friday at the gallery and will also host an artist talk this Saturday, November 8 at 1:00 pm.

my kulturBOT is the JNAAG's resident robotic art critic for the month of November. Created by David Harris Smith and Frauke Zeller, the bot will attend the current exhibitions and tweeting about the artworks, patrons, and venues, exploring the art and exhibition spaces with an intentional randomness in terms of both its movements and its tweet content. Patrons are encouraged to participate by using the hashtag #JNAAG on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram in response to the various exhibitions on display. Tweets, posts, and pictures are displayed on a live feed into the community using the gallery's projection screens.

Visitors will also have the opportunity to view Part II of Art Lab: Activated Absence, which provides an in-depth look at some challenging pieces from the permanent collection by Ron Martin and offers visitors the opportunity to develop new relationships with these abstract works.

Other exhibitions now on display include the Pop-Ups and Illustrated Books of Voljtěch Kubašta, and Our Own Back Yard featuring works by Bright's Grove based artist Mary Abma and Edmonton artist Lyndal Osborne.

Take part in our #JNAAG project and interact with the new exhibitions and programs in a new and exciting way. Explore the gallery and post your pictures and comments using the hashtag #JNAAG on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. Tweets, posts, and pictures will be displayed on a live feed into the community using the gallery's projection screens. iPads are available to those without access to a social media account.
